SAFETY MEMBER CONTRIBUTION RATES

All LACERA plans are contributory plans; both you and your employer contribute. The member contribution rate is a percentage of your compensation, and it differs by plan and other variables.

Contribution rate percentages for all plans are subject to change as a result of several factors, including interest rate changes set by the Board of Investments and system actuarial valuations. System valuations, which are performed every three years as prescribed by law, provide the basis for member contribution rate adjustments deemed necessary to properly fund the system.

If you are a member in Safety Plan A or B, your contribution rate is a percentage of your compensation earnable, based on your entry age into LACERA.

If you were within six months of your next birthday when you joined LACERA, your entry age is based on the age you will become on that birthday. If you were more than six months from your next birthday when you joined LACERA, your entry age is based on the age you were on the first day of your membership.

Examples:

  • You were 29 when you entered LACERA in March 2012, and your birthday is in August; your official entry age is 30.
  • You were 29 when you entered LACERA in March 2012, and your birthday is in January; your official entry age is 29.

If you are a member in Safety Plan A or B, for the course of your career, regardless of how many years you work, your contributions are calculated based on your entry age. For example, if your official entry age is 30, your contributions will always be based on the age 30 rate, regardless of how many years you work. Under some conditions, entry age for returning employees may be based on their age at the time they rejoined LACERA. For more information, call 800-786-6464.

If you are a member in Safety Plan C, your contribution rate is based on a flat rate percentage of your base salary, plus certain other pay items included in pensionable compensation. In accordance with the law, Safety Plan C contribution rates are structured to reflect 50/50 cost-sharing. Under 50/50 cost-sharing, the member and the employer are required to split the retirement system's normal cost, which is the present value of the pension benefits accrued in the current year. Any contribution rate adjustments for Safety Plan C are based on annual actuarial valuation reports and subsequent recommendations adopted by the Board of Supervisors.

2020 Changes in Actuarial Assumptions and Contribution Rates

This year, the Board of investments approved new actuarial assumptions based on a triennial experience study, and also approved new employer and employee contribution rates for all plans based on the annual valuation. New LACERA-recommended rates were unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors at its May 12, 2020 meeting.

The attached new rates will be effective as of July 1, 2020.
