Please Ask for Help - Depression Is Not a Normal Part of Aging

Because depression often accompanies other serious illnesses, many healthcare professionals chalk it up to a normal result of these problems, especially in seniors. Many seniors share this belief and don't ask for help, not realizing that they could feel better with appropriate treatment.

The following are common signs and symptoms of depression:

  • Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness
  • Irritability, restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
  • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
  • Overeating or appetite loss
  • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not get better, even with treatment

If you or a family member experiences the following symptoms, talk to your doctor about treatment options.
