LACERA's retirement fund relies on three sources of funding: investment earnings, employer contributions, and employee (member) contributions. Your contribution rate for Safety Plan A or B (legacy plans) is a percentage of your compensation earnable, based on your entry age into LACERA.
As legacy plans, Safety Plans A and B contribution rates are generally updated when certain actuarial assumptions change, as determined in a study called an investigation of experience, conducted every three years.
Adjustments are based on changes to actuarial assumptions, and rates are calculated by LACERA’s actuary based on retirement law. The law requires the member to pay a portion of the cost of their retirement benefits and also requires that the cost-of-living benefit amount be shared equally between the member and the employer. (Employer rates are updated annually based on fund evaluations.) Read more about how contributions rates are set.

The new contribution rates are effective as of July 1, 2023.
